The path towards the gorge of Agia Irini The European long-distance path E4, begins at the Pyr Mountains, crosses the Alps and through Yugoslavia reaches Florina where the greek part of the path begins. From Florina, the E4 path continues across continental Greece, reaches Gytheio in Peloponesos and from there virtually reaches Kastelli in Crete. From Kastelli it begins and crosses along the whole island of Crete, reaching Zakros in the east where it ends. E4 path gives walkers the opportunity to know the unknown Cretan nature, since it meets with old paths, settlements, monasteries and of course the high mountains of Crete.

Four of the subparts of E4 begin at Omalos and offer routes of imporessive natural beauty.

Bridge in the gorge of Samaria The gorge of Samaria is the longest in Europe with total length of 18 kilometers. The width of the gorge ranges from 150 meters at the widest point down to 3 meters at the narrowest. The gorge of Samaria has been proclaimed a national park in order to protect the rare flora and fauna.

Walking along the gorge takes 6 to 8 hours and even though the path is downslope, visitors must have tough and convenient shoes and some phsyical strength.

The plateau of Omalos The famous plateau of Omalos is surrounded by the high crowns of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) at 1,040 to 1,250 meters and is just 38 km from the town of Chania. The plateau of Omalos is the physical border and "meeting" point among 3 from the 5 counties of the prefecture of Chania, namely Kydonia, Sfakia and Selino.

The plateau of Omalos was the shelter of the locals and the base of rebels during the two and a half centruries of the Turkish occupation, but also during all other wars against invadors.

From the plateau and specifically from the location Xyloskalo at 1,250 m high, there is the start of the path along the world famous Samaria gorge. In Xyloskalo there is a forest outpost and information centre (small museum) about Lefka Ori and Samaria
